UPDATED: Miners win sixth regional
(High School Sports ~ 11/13/11)
With one of the highest producing offenses in the state of Indiana providing the boost instead of the emphasis, the Linton-Stockton Miners claimed their sixth IHSAA Class A Football Regional title with a 28-0 win over visiting Milan Saturday night at Roy Williams Field. "I love it," Linton-Stockton (13-0) coach Steve Weber said. "I just hope we do better than we have the last few times." Coming into the game the Miners sported the highest scoring offense in the state, but on Saturday it was the muscles of an almost unheralded defense that stole the spotlight. "On a night when the offense stuttered a little bit the defense did a great job," Weber said. "And that's good to know that we don't have to score all the time. It's nice to know we can work on some things and ride on their backs, it was a great night for them." The Miners held the highly-vaunted Indians' rusher Cory Strunk to just 59 yards. The 5-9, 170 pound senior workhorse back had rushed for nearly 2,500 yards coming into the contest. But when the dust settled Saturday night, the Miner defense had shown almost complete control over the standout runner. "He's a stud runner," LSHS senior Kent Helton said. "We knew he could run and we knew we had to shut him down and we did what we had to do." He was wrangled for seven of the 13 negative yardage plays the Milan offense was forced to concede. And he was allowed only two carries in double-digits (12 and 15 yards). "That running back's the best running back we've faced all year," Miner junior Koye Kaiser said. "And to do what we did was amazing. Our defense really won the game." The Miner defense also tamed Milan backup quarterback Gavin Detraz. The sophomore had been called into action when Milan starter Zach Lewis suffered a broken collarbone in last week's sectional final. Linton-Stockton's defenders gave the signal caller a hard lesson about what it's like to face a defense that was hitting on all cylinders. They allowed him to complete just nine of 17 passes and burned him for a Cole Bradbury interception in the closing stages of the contest that sealed the win. He was also forced to run the football six times for negative yardage as well and had a key fumble late in the first half. Entering Saturday's title tilt the Miners had already been stingy on defense allowing just over nine points a contest. This weekend's game marked the fourth shutout of the season for Linton-Stockton and the seventh straight game that saw them limit the opposition to seven points or less. While the Miner defense was containing the Indians, the Linton-Stockton offense was doing just enough to get the job done. "Our defense was phenomenal, it really was a defensive game tonight," LSHS quarterback Austin Karazsia said. "They stopped one of the best running backs in the state and it was just a great game. "The offense we scored when we had to." After getting off to a slow start, the Miners finally got rolling offensively on their second possession of the night. It began on a short field, which was also a by product of the solid defensive effort of the Miners. Linton-Stockton began four of their nine possessions in Milan territory, including their initial drive which began at the Indian 36. From there it took only seven snaps for the state's passing leader Karazsia to engineer the Miners first foray to paydirt. Karazsia was limited to 114 yards on nine of 21 passing. "He had to work hard for what he got," Weber said. "I'm not so sure he was able to get into a rhythm." Karazsia and Helton joined forces to chew up 29 yards both through the air and on the ground before Grant Stamm put the final touches on the drive when he hauled in a 7-yard toss from Karazsia, that combined with the first of four Dyllanne Deischer extra points, gave the Miners a 7-0 lead with 3:41 to play in the first quarter. "We were kind of forced into a running style," Weber said. "But that's OK, we're not too proud to run the ball. "We'll take whatever the defense allows. I don't care if we don't score, if the defense carries us then we'll keep winning and moving on." After another stalled Milan drive, Linton-Stockton took over at their own 11 yard line and right away showed flashes of the offense that had gotten them to the regional title game. Helton, who finished the night with 78 yards on 10 carries, and the game's leading rusher Kaiser, teamed up to extend the lead. First Helton moved the football away from the end zone's shadow when he danced his way to the 30 yard line on the first play of the drive. Then Kaiser, who finished with 89 rushing yards to lead both teams, first broke through for five yards ahead of a 65 yard outburst that ultimately left the Indian defenders looking up at a 14-0 deficit. "The line did a great job of blocking," Kaiser said. "I had to make a couple of kids miss and I did." The final points of the first half came in the second quarter as time was expiring. It was setup after the Linton-Stockton defense once again made a showcase stop. Milan bridged the first and second quarters with a drive that ate up over 10 and a half total minutes on the clock. The drive began at the Milan 30 yard line with just 32 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. When it was over they had moved the ball to the Linton-Stockton 25 yard line on 18 plays, but produced nothing on the scoreboard thanks to a solid effort from the Miner secondary and a failure by Detraz to complete passes for positive yardage on the back end of the drive. He was thwarted with a 4-yard loss on a toss to fullback Scott Pennington on third down and an incompletion on fourth down. Milan's only defensive highlight of the night came on the ensuing Linton-Stockton drive as they sacked Karazsia on first down and forced incompletions on the next two plays to force one of only two Miner punts on the evening. The Indians' success was short-lived thanks to a fumble recovery by Tanner Butler on the first play from scrimmage. Butler's heroics set up another short Miner drive that resulted in a six play, 17 yard drive that ended the half when Kaiser ran the final yard as the clock expired. After a scoreless third quarter, that saw the Miner defense remain dominant, the fourth quarter became the final piece of the Linton-Stockton trip to the semistate puzzle. First they survived another long Milan offensive drive, one that began at the 30 second mark of the third quarter at the Indian 14 and ended at the 5:25 mark of the fourth at the Linton-Stockton 19. The final points of the night were set up after the Miner defense came up with another stop, taking over at the Milan 20. Helton did all the work hauling the football for 2, 17 and finally 1 yard to paydirt. Bradbury put the cou de grau on the night when he intercepted a Detraz pass on the Indians next possession. "It was a pretty good night for the hole team and for the community," Helton said afterwards. "We knew what we had to do, we knew we had to stop a strong team. "We prepared all week for them and I want to say this game is one that I've played with the most emotion all of my life. "We got the job done and now we're ready to get to the semistate." Now the Miners set their sights on the Indianapolis Scecina Crusaders when they travel to the University of Indianapolis' Key Stadium on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. for the semistate.
