The girls competed in the queen's scholarship contest Sunday at the Dugger Community Building during the fest's opening weekend. Events continue through the week, with the majority of attractions slated for Thursday through Sunday.
The 2012 Dugger Coal Festival is underway, with the lion's share of the weeklong festival's events starting Thursday.

While Coal Festival Committee Chairwoman Jen Pinkston said events got off to a slow start Sunday with a homemade chicken and noodle dinner at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, attendance was strong for the Coal Festival Queen contest Sunday afternoon.

"We're moving right along," said Pinkston.

There, Cali Hale, 17 and a senior at Union High School, was crowned queen Sunday during the scholarship contest.

Conner Kendall, 17 and a senior, was her first runner up, while Hannah Sullivan, 16 and a UHS junior, took second runner up.

Little Miss and Mister results will be announced in Thursday's edition.

Monday's Pampered Chef Bingo in the Dugger Community Center and Tuesday's bean dinner at the American Legion drew strong crowds, said event organizers.

"It went well," said Carolyn Settles.

Terri Heaton, who volunteered at the bean supper, said over 100 people dined Tuesday afternoon, raising funds for the Legion.

"That's the way it should be," said Heaton. "These are our hometown heroes. They risked their lives for our country. They risked their lives for us."

Heaton encouraged festivalgoers to come out and enjoy the town at its best.

"Come to the Coal Festival and enjoy time with family and friends," said Heaton. "When people ask where is Dugger? It's between family and friends. Let's put Dugger back on the map, as a great place to be!"
